Default Is it Difficult to Replace a Primary Cover on FXDWG?

I scratched my primary cover on a 13' Wide Glide. I put some touch up
paint on it (wrinkle Black). Looks better...but, I'm going to replace it.
I'm not mechanic, but would like to do it myself. Is it hard to do?
I dont want to scratch anything again. Be safe!

No...not difficult at all. Get a new gasket. Dont over tighten bolts. If you dont have a small 1/4" torque wrench (inch lbs)...get one.

You'll need to drain your primary oil and re-fill. .maybe a new gasket. That's an expensive repair for just cosmetic damage. You'll also need a good torque wrench, an extension, and allen sockets. Cost for a new cover is somewhere around $200, oil another $10, gasket another $30. .is it really that bad?

Not difficult at all. Just need to drain fluid, replace gasket, and torque to specs. I happen to have a new prestine black primary cover that I replaced with a chrome one. PM me for details if interested! I will give ya a good deal. It only takes one quart of oil ($13 if Syn3 is used) and gasket may be reused if absolutely necessary. Mine was reuseable anyway.

Ya, you need to drain the oil...it's basically what holds the oil in.

Pretty simple actually.

Like already mentioned I would get a new gasket, although I have reused them before in a pinch.
1. There is a drain plug directly under the clutch basket that takes a 5/8" wrench. Remove that and drain into a container.
2. Remove the Torx head bolts from the Derby cover as you will have to reinstall that onto the new primary cover after installing and filling with oil.
3. Remove all of the socket head fasteners around the perimeter of the primary cover.
4. Remove primary cover.
5. Clean mating surface of inner primary and install gasket.
6. Install new primary outer cover and torque to 108-120 in/lbs.
7. Pour in the proper amount of HD primary lubricant through the Derby cover. It should just be to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring (approx. 1 qt.).
8. Install the Derby cover with new gasket and torque to 84-108 in/lbs.

Ride and enjoy. Try not to scratch it this time.

Mike.

No offense but sounds like this might be above your experience level if you didn't know there was oil in there. . .

Just may be that he is not familiar with HD's. Was a bit of a learning curve (still learning) for me coming from sport bikes.

OP: Go for it bro, even if you screw up you are still learning!
