I'm going to look at a 2002 FXDWG3 tomorrow. It has 8,000 miles and looks CLEAN.
My biggest concerns:
- Every bike I've had has been fuel injected. This is carb'ed. Any issues there?
- Cam chain tensioners - I know they need to be replaced/upgraded fairly soon. Is this a big project?
- The 5 speed transmission. How does it compare to the 6 speed?
Are there any other conerns I should have in this bike?
I really LOVE the bike. My buddy had a 2001 FXDWG2 and I just LOVED it.
Since its considered to be a CVO model, does it have any different engine modifications compared to the stock 88 c.i. motor?
It's an awesome bike "if" the price is right. I did not do the cam tensioner upgrade until I hit 40k. It needed it. I love the cv carb. You also have the last year if the Timkin gear in the bottom end. The 5 speed is bullet proof. Not sure about the cvo engine but my guess is you have the Screaming Eagle heads. If it's the orange one with the yellow flame and mags it's a collector. Once again, whats the asking price?
once you learn how to use a choke then carbs arent a big deal.
if you plan on playing with the engine, intake or pipes its easier to let someone with a dyno do the rejetting rather than guessing and then trial and error.
im somewhat concerned about a 12 year old bike with 8k miles on it. it means the bike sat for a long time. and thats never a good thing for a bike. anything rubber should be inspected for rot. fuel system cleaned at the very least. all depends on how it was stored.
