I've never used those relocation kits but I've seen them, looks like a lot of work but if you do it I'ld love to hear about it.
As far as making it easier to get the filter off from it's present location I use K&N filters with the nut welded on the top, makes it a snap, and a modified pop bottle to reduce the mess on the motor.
i always use tin foil and mold it to the engine case and other stuff and kinda form a funnel at the bottom of it to drain in the pan. then its liek those ladies say on the commercial "clean ups a snap" just pull the foil of and wad up and throw away. this is a but of a challenge the first time or so tryin to get it in there and good but works real well and clean up is very simple
I simply shove a piece of thin cardboard (about letter size) under the filter until the edge hits the crankcase. The forward edge of the cardboard sticks out in front of the frame and forms a natural funnel shape. Place a catch can under that edge and pull the filter off. The oil will track right down that cardboard like a river in a valley.
I have yet to spill as much as a single drop of oil on either the frame or shop floor, so there is no cleanup to be done.
Removing the filter by hand is difficult? Yaaa, I bet it is. Get yourself an oil filter wrench for that.........pg
It never hurts to have it somewhere where a lot of breeze will blow over to get as much air-flow as possible for cooling.....but I live where it's hot most of the time.........if you just stick a heavy duty baggie over the whole thing and then take it off it won't make too much of a mess........good luck........
