Default dumb question - oil filter

Ok I want to know if you remove the oil filter without draining the oil first, will it pour out the filter housing, or not?

It will make a hell of a mess. Drain your oil first, then get a plastic beer cup, cut it in half lengthwise, cut the bottom out of it and place it beneath your filter before you wrench it off...

Same amount of loss in my experience with oil drained or not.
I've taken my filter off to check for some leaks around the filter adaptor
for my oil cooler. Bike was level on a rack and dip stick in which may have
made a difference.
Actually, the mess was less doing it that way.

Take a small phillips head screw driver (or similar device) with a hammer knock a hole on in the filter on the end and the bottom, and another hole on top for air. Then use just some cardboard or something (12 pack beer package works good) to drain the oil into your catch container.

I use a 2 liter soda bottle and cut the top off even across the bottle. Then I cut a slot wide enough about 1/3 of the way down one side of the bottle to get my thumb and forefinger in to unscrew the filter after I losen it with the filter wench. After you losen the filter just hold the liter bottle over the filter with one hand and reach in through the slot with your fingers and unscrew the filter, works everytime without spilling a drop.
