I have the wide vintage solo and love it. Never tried the Sundowner. The Mustang is a very well made seat with rivet fasteners holding the covering to the base. If the Sundowner is like other HD seats they most likely use staples. Not that staples do not work, but the riveted Mustang seems to be of higher quality IMO.
I have 2 Sundowner solo seats both are comfortable one I added a gel pad to the cushion, which made it more comfortable, but my local upholsterer decided to make another cover and cut up the original for a pattern. The cover he made looks like crap compared to the stock one. I have a Saddlemen Explorer seat I use for long trips and 2 up riding, I find it to be the most comfortable. I tried a Mustang Wide Vintage and although it was comfortable it was too wide to fit between the hard bags I modified to fit on my bike. I also tried the Mustang Tripper with the removable backrest, and while the backrest was great the seat was too hard/thin for any long distance rides.
Keep in mind that if you buy the seat directly from Mustang you can try it for 10 days and return it if you don't like it. Most other places won't let you return it once it has been mounted. Also you might want to check Ebay for a used Sundowner. I picked my 2nd up there for $90.00 and it was in great shape.
I have the Sundowner and a Mustang, Although both are very comfortable I think the Mustang is a lot better looking. FYI: the Sundowner will set you a little higher & closer to the tank
The Mustang moved me up 1" and back 2". I had to spend another $175 to have it modified as well as softened....Have it done at a local shop and not sent out of state, that way if you need to take it back because the guy who reworked it was in a hurry and it showed, it will simplify the process instead of sending it across the continent to NC....

They do feel hard at first but a road trip from Houston across Louisiana, Mississippi to Northeast Alabama and back to Houston in mid-July softened mine up...along with toughening up my bony butt...
I just put on a wide vintage touring mustang seat on my luxe along with the backrest. Skinman: i hope you are correct---will soften up a bit... I feel it pretty hard right now compared to stock. But i do feel more secure and the back rest is great!!
Mine has either softened up or my *** toughened up...not sure which. Either way, it is far more comfortable on the long rides than the Sundowner was for me.
I see a lot of mixed reviews on the mustang seat. I think its seating comfort has a lot to do with your riding position, at least to me anyways. I can easily go all day with my wide vintage if Im using my mid controlls but when I switch to my highway pegs my back will start to get uncomfortabe in about a half hour.
