Murphy rides a Harley...
My SG has engine guard fog lights and last winter I replaced the tacky looking amateurish push button switch that hangs down from the clutch control housing with a rocker switch installed in a expansion space in a auxiliary switch housing. The switch I put in was supposed to be sealed but I noticed it smoking a little when I was riding in the rain on a road trip last summer and although I have not had any other issues with it, I knew it was only a matter of time. I ordered a HD auxiliary switch from the dealer after the trip and finally got around to replacing it on Tuesday.
Replacing the switch was pretty easy and I checked everything out thoroughly and the system was working perfectly. I didn't get to ride until Thursday and I turned the fog lights on in the morning and on my way home from work at dusk to be more visible in traffic. That's when my headlight and running lights went dark...not good. Riding in heavy traffic at near dark with no lights gets your attention fast.
I got home and checked the light fuse which was blown. Now because of my years of experience with electrical and electronic circuits, I know that fuses don't just blow, something shorted to cause it so I replace the fuse and go back to the auxiliary switch housing to check for problems and there it was...even though I was careful to avoid it, the switch output wire was pinched...and even though I thoroughly checked out everything when I had it all back together, the vibration eventually wore through the insulation to short out when I turned it on and when I needed it most.
Murphy.
I got lucky...I was up and back on the road in 30 minutes. It could have been far worse if I had damaged the turn signal or bright/dim headlight switch I would still be down waiting for a replacement or I could have been replacing burned wires or a damaged fuse block. (Thank you, Harley God)
This only goes to show, that no matter how much you know about what you are doing and how careful you are, Murphy is lurking nearby and will get ya at the worst time and when you least expect it.

BTW, this a great thread and a good reason for riding. Check it out.
