I rode a lot in my twenties (Yamaha 650 Special II), but stopped riding when I got married and realized my mortality. Last summer, at age 55, I realized my mortality again and decided to start riding again while I still can. I always wanted a Harley, and I was first leaning toward a Sportster, but the Street Bob just felt right so I got a new 2013 Street Bob.
I was a bit rusty at first after 27 years of not riding, and with the extra weight, but I got comfortable pretty quickly. I've got about 2800 miles on the SB now, and I love it. I did the Stage 1 mods and added panniers, and with the better weather now, I'm looking forward to a lot of riding.
As most have said, you'll not regret the move to a Dyna. After all, Dynas are Sportsters on steroids. I had my 1200C 9 years and while I loved the Sporty, I haven't regretted my FXDC for a minute. I don't think that there's a bike out there that's more flexible than a Dyna. Enjoy and welcome to the Dyna family!
I rode Triumphs Nortons and sportbikes for 40+ years before my 1st Harley, a Sportster that I really enjoyed. I fell into the trap of thinking bigger is better and traded for a Switchback which no matter what I did with it I never liked it. It always felt like I was in a minivan. I traded it for a used 1200c and I'm liking my riding much better again now.
I've now spent this season on my '07 FXDL and am still getting used to the additional weight over my old 1200S. I can also say now that my 1200S was much faster than my Dynojet dyno tuned Stage 1 FXDL running both to the extended 6,200rpm redines.
Last year, when I first considered getting a HD, I started off thinking about getting a Sportster 1200. I wanted to transition from a sportbike to a cruiser. I thought a 1200C or 48 would be the ticket to replace my GSXR 600. Then I did two Demo Day events and went with the LR. You get a lot more bike with a Street Bob or LR for just a few thousand more than a 1200.
