I started to title this thread, "Springer and 16 inchwheel on a BOB"just to go along with the recent threads, but I decided against it. My question is this. I want to put a springer on my SB. But I don't want the 21" wheel. I want to run a 16" wheel so I have a taller side wall. But will a stock length springer work? Or do I need a +2" or something? I want my bike to sit level without having to mess with the back suspension. Any input would be appreciated. kpreese, do you have any advice?
no prob....if you re-read kpreese's original thread on his install...he said there was quite a bit of machining[grinding] to be done on the lower tree and you'll lose the fork lock...
I would start specifically with the Heritage front end. With a little luck,it'll be about the same as what I had to do.
I've been toying with trying to get the 19" on mine, but I have zero cash for tinkering at the moment. The springer on the Heritage is actually a different springer as I understand. I think the fork spacing is wider. If that's truethen it*could* cause some problems, but you won't know until you try. No one else is going to have the answers to your questions unfortunately.
What I did was define key areas of potential trouble and then asked VERY specific questions, asked for photos and measurements, etc from a few members via PM. Start with the basics and ask the softail guys if they can tell you the differences in the front ends. Are the fork spacings different? Fork lengths different? Perhaps try to find out how the fender mounts vary, etc.
As I've said before, be happy to help where my experience is useful. Ask me anything, anytime. But you are in uncharted territorylike I was. I can help you, but only so far since you aren't going the same exact place I did. But if you can establish what the differences are between the two springers, you can still use what I've done as a spring board.
