This is a stupid problem. When you change out the clutch lever there is a small retaining ring that holds the pivot pin in place. I have tried every which way to remove this retaining ring without having to replace it with a new one. Anybody have any suggestions how to get this thing off without damaging it? It's probably a $1 item but I hate to have to go buy a new one unless I have to.
You really need the snap ring pliers which by the way once you have them, you will use them regularly. The particular snap ring your trying to remove requires very small points as well, so look for the finest points you can find They sell kits for these pliers with different points but if you don't want to spend $1.00 I'm not sure what to tell you.
I got mine off with long nose pliers, and it promptly flew out of sight. It wasn't until I got back home with the replacement a couple of days later that I found it.
I promptly walked over to the tool chest to get the snap ring pliers to reinstall. If you go to Sears, you can find pliers with several different sized tips.
You can get it off with a couple paper clips bent 90 degrees at the end, but you end up needing one more hand to do it. Go to Autozone or Advance Auto and get a cheappair of external snap ring pliers for $5-$6.
Just watch you don't let it go flying across the room as you take it off. Lost one on my Sportster, and had the bright idea that the pin was pretty tight and I didn't need it. Vibrations eventually caused the pin to work it's way out. I got lucky and realized as I was sitting at a long red light that I was really close to losing a lever.
Like everyone else has said a snap-ring pliers. If you buy one get the internal and external pliers, That way you can use it in more than one type of snap-ring.
Thanks for all the advice. I didn't realize there was a tool to do the job!
Anyway I finally got it off with a couple tools I use for tying flies ( flyfishing )
The rest of the install took 5 minutes!
