Just bought my first bike, a 1997 fxdwg with 27000 miles. As im looking it over tonight, i noticed the belt looking like this. Any ideas as to what could of caused it? Is it normal wear & tear, or should i be calling the dealership to try and get them to fix it? Should i even ride it like this? Thanks in advance for reading this.

It's rubbing on something. Not normal wear and tear for 27000. If you bought it from a dealer, that's bullshit they should have caught that.
Needs to be fixed asap but I doubt it's dangerous. I've thrown the chain on an older bike and just coasted to a stop. Don't see why it would be worse with a belt.
Thanks for the reply. Looks like im going to have to give them a call in the morning & start the battle. They gave me a 1000 mile warranty, so hopefully there wont be any squabble.
most likely the previous owner had something hanging there that rubbed. Weird they didn't hear it and do something about it but some folks are ignorant. It is however not dangerous in my opinion the wear should occur on the flip side of the belt. Check there for signs of wear or chords hanging out, if it looks all good I'm not sure they will change it out for you. They should but and if they want your buisness they will. Use that!
I just had another look at that belt and I agree with the others it needs to be changed.
Yes that could very well be an alignment issue.
