Before you commit to have the wrok done at the dealer...you better make sure the dyno tuner really knows what he's doing. I see a ton of people spend big bucks on engine work and then they get a shitty tune and negates the results.
I was actually just sitting here thinking, maybe I should not do the custom tune and check in with Jamie at FuelMoto to see what he has for a canned map. Thoughts on that approach?
Also looking through the SE catalogue, the stage 2 kit is only $800 USD. Part number 29893-07B. I'd assume I could buy that, and substitute the cams of my choice for the 255's included in the kit.
You'll get a ton of different opinions here. There is nothing better to dial in an engine then a quality dyno tune. Take it slow and do your research and you will find out the best way for you to go. Don't rush into it...you already rushed into the slip ons which you will have to get rid of if you want the best results.

Slip ons came with the bike. Big sucker and Thunderheader are waiting for a nice day to go on.
Don't skimp on the tune. A good dyno tune will make or break it. 4 hours seems a little steep but not if it's a GREAT tune. I have to question their experience just for suggesting the 254e over the 204. Stick with the 204. As mentioned, no need for the adjustables. No need for se plugs either, stockers work great. I'd run a .030" head gasket.
I would say you can save the 200 plus a little more by researching what the kit includes.
If he is a decent dealer, he may order everything and then remove what is not needed after they see what is in the kit...taking it off your bill.
I would want to know though and would go in there well informed.
-He's totally right, gaskets are in the package, and don't bother with plugs unless yours are really decrepit.
-Go with a better cam too as long as your paying that much (400$) then get some S&S cams for about 300 which will be better.
-You said stage II are there a set of heads with this kit? NO! because if nothing is being done to the heads you still have a stageI.
-a gasket kit should come to about 75$ even here in canada.
-don't buy the diaphram (clutch) spring you can get a barnett clutch spring for about 30$ and it will be much stronger.
-I've seen kits like that at HD for 1000 brand new and a good indy can tear that down and have it all back together in 6 hours.
-and like everyone else said make sure the dyno guy is real good because HD will just throw a download in there and send off to 'Njoy your new mods!
Man I just sold my old 103" kit for 400! (255 cams 103 pistons and cylinders they did not change my pushrods or lifters it wasn't necessary)

I was hoping you would weigh in. Thanks for confirming 204's. Initially I was just thinking doing the cam swap, but may as we'll do the big bore while it's in there rather than to have to come back and do it later. If it's only an extra 400 in parts and a couple extra hours labour, why not right? Right?

Great info. Should I just say f all this and take a week off this summer to make the 1600km ride to Wisconsin to have Fuel Moto put in their 107 kit for $2200 installed, broken in and dyno'd?

It's still a stage-I until you have head work. Sounds like a fun ride though and you get to meet the bunch at fuel moto!
I'm not sure that is the best soloution give the 3200 KM drive but I would never get an HD big bore again. It's way over priced and rare is the HD tekk I would trust to get the work done, nowadays you get mostly peach-fuzzed kids fresh out of " press tab A into slot B " school.

I always thought:
Stage 1- intake, exhaust, fuel mgmt
Stage 2 - stage 1 + big bore with cams
Stage 3 - stage 2 with heads
Stage 4 - is a mystical place no one can afford

Are there no honest dealers out there? working with two in my area to work out a plan and they are both determined to take as much cash out of my pocket as humanly possible, it's clear they are not giving me solutions that are best for me, they are giving me solutions that are best for them.
