I've got a '99 FXDX that has nice smooth dent in the top of the tank... can anyone tell me if the tank is double lined? also, any tricks to poppin it out?
It's best to do it when the tank is near empty, on a hot day(the hotter the better). Start by moving the dry ice around the dent and working towards the middle. If it doesn't work the first time let the tank warm up and try again. Sometimes it takes a few tries.
I would ask your dealer for a paintless dent repair techs number. I have done dents for my local HD dealer. Do you have a pic? If it is a smooth dent it should come out real nice. Best wishes.
Access is the key. A fuel injected tank has a door that allows greater access from behind the dent. If the tank has not been repainted then a suction pull may improve the situation.
A professional is a sort of artist and could better advise you.
Some major bike rallys sometimes have a tent for such issues.
Turn signal dent?
here are two quick snaps i took... its on the top of the tank here..
thoughts?
i was thinking of going to a Dent Dr or whatever but also thought perhaps its a quick fix i can do at home..
The dry ice trick may work for a smooth dent that large as well as a small plunger and a quick tug. I have done it in the past with cars but never my bike. If those dont work then a stud welder is the best bet. Paintless dent repair places use a small suction cup plunger device a lot that is in a jig that will have 3 other points of contact or more around the dent and they will very slowly pull the dent. You can buy them for home use but like others have said. Its an art.
