Not trying to be a smart *** here but you have a tach and a speedo now can't you figure what gear your in? I know that came out wrong and i apologize in advance but i guess i don't get it is all
Maybe i just getting to long in the tooth 43 years on 2 wheels never had a idiot light to tell me what gear i was in.
There is no mechanical link or circuit that tells the speedo what gear it is in. It calculates your speed vs rpm to determine what gear you in. For example if I'm going 35 mph at approximately 2000rpm it figures that I am in 3rd gear - using factory stock calculations. You'll notice than when the engine is running but you're not moving-it has no idea what gear you may be in. For eample you could be in 1st gear at a stop light with the clutch lever pulled in.
In your case I would suggest you have a defective led-(it should light momentarily when you start your bike?) If not, that would be it.
Or the speedo is defective, or you have had some serious engine/tranny work done that the speedo can't calculate.
Good luck and let us know when you get it figured out

I don't have a lot of miles on yet (me or my bike), but from what I've experienced so far, the only difference between 5th and 6th gearis the LED light .
Not all the features of the speedo/tachs work on all bikes.....I'd say you're lucky if all that doesn't work is the 6th gear indicator, since you bought a part not listed as fitting bike.
The Harley web page says that speedo tach 70900274 fits 04-11 Dynas. The earlier years in that range won't have the gear indicator at all. There is not a green "6 gear" indicator like stock. Is the gear indicator function turned on? If so is it displaying gears 1-5? The gear indicator will display gears 1-6 on the right of the display. If the gear indicator function doesn't work with your year, you lose the green indicator for 6th gear.
I have this same speedo on my '07 FXD and I am pretty sure I get the 6th gear indicator. I definitely do NOT have actual gear readout functionality, but I *think* I remember having a 6th gear idiot light. Hmm, I'll have to check next time I'm out ok the freeway.
How many miles have you put on the bike with the new speedo? You need to ride at least 31.5 miles before it 'sets' to your bike. That might be the problem.
