Either way, would have freaked me out a bit as well. Glad you made it through safe.

Glad you're ok OP

I agree, like I said, there is more breaking power in the front. However a lot of the stopping power on these bikes come from the rear. I'm just stating a fact so people don't follow a 95/5 rule, 70/30 is better.

note: I reference sport bikes because I ride both and I'm sure a lot of the people here have also owned one previously. On those bikes the rear isn't AS important.

I remember a time when most people disconnected their front brake. Using the front brake was a big no-no. It would lock up and nose dive and either flip or you'd lose control.

Definitely a time and place for both front and back, either or. Also, learning those times.

I'm glad you are ok. Discovering decreased stopping ability would lead to major puckering (yes, I use my front brake god majority of stopping, but to each their own)

Ever heard of muscle memory?
Ever seen a bike panic stop using only the front brake?
When the front locks up the *** end will try to pass the front end. (down you go)
Applying the back break slightly less than the front so it don't lock up, helps keep the bike aligned for a good stop.
Always stop using both brakes. If you do, when that emergency stop catches you off guard your muscles will default to the best way to stop.
Get lazy or careless stopping with the back or front only and you'll likely "have to lay her down" when an emergency arrises.

Still, I would have rode to the store for a bolt. I'm a risk taker. But not one who would leave my bike for someone to have their way with it.

I remember when idiots used to say those kinds of things....I was one of those idiots in those days.

Then I learned how to actually ride the motorcycle.

People say stupid things to justify whatever it is that they are trying to argue...I remember an ABATE meeting a long time ago when some idiot stood up and actually said "Full face helmets are so heavy that they will break your neck when you crash!".

All of the other drunks were sitting there nodding their heads in agreement.

People are idiots!

Did you ever use the back brake in a hard brake situation...even in conjunction with the front brake...on a fresh wet road? Usually no problem unless you push a little too hard... However, if you push a little too hard, the rear wheel will lockup and come around on you faster than you can react to straighten it out...even if you quickly get off, the rear is coming around and the front is going to tuck.

Although I don't do it normally, I have stopped my bike extremely fast using only the front, just to see how well I could. Learning to modulate the "friction zone" of your brakes is just as important as learning it on the clutch.
Don't forget about engine braking, either. Using both brakes is ideal, but losing one or the other in all but the most extreme circumstances is no cause for panic.
Ride safe...
