Okay guys here is one of the things that can go wrong when changing from mid controls to forward controls. I wanted it done like HD recommends so I went set by set, like the instructions say.
I will not bore you with all the detail just up until the mishap happened.
The wife finally gave the okay to spend the 300.00 + for the forward controls but that means that I would have to do the work myself. After reading the 1 billion and 1 posts on the subject I decided to tackle the project myself and save the average 120 - 200 for labor.
I was able to take off the primary cover and the inner primary with no problems, to I thought. While removing the clutch assembly the retaining bolt and the lock bolt came off really easy, but looking at the Release plate, my worse nightmare suddenly came true. Yet it was stripped, DAMN[:@]. I thought that if I put it back together really gingerly it would be fine. So I continued with the dissasembly.
All went smooth, removed the inner primary installed the new forward controls.
Now time for reassembly.
Reassembled the inner primary and the Drive components. Now I get back to the reinstalling the Release plate, and you guessed it. It will not tighten.[:'(]. By this time the beer was really starting to get warm and I had used every foul mouthed word that you can think of.
So now I'm on the hunt for a Release plate, but I am not sure of the HD part number. I think that it is 37903-90. Could anyone verify that for me??
Recommendation:
1. When removing the Drive components, loosen the clutch cable. This should allow free play of the clutch and take the pressure off of the Release plate.
37903-90 is the correct part number for the picture you are showing of your release plate, I confirmed it from the 2006 parts catalog 99439-06A page 40 & 41.
"1. When removing the Drive components, loosen the clutch cable. This should allow free play of the clutch and take the pressure off of the Release plate."
that is true, it is a tech tip in the manual. Loosen the clutch cable before doing any work on the release mechanism.
