I have HD's QD compact windshield. Im 5'10" and it works great. No obnoxious wind noise, no watery eyes (prescription glasses) and still get plenty air. When I wear my FF helmet I do get some buffeting but not a problem when wearing my shorty. I originally was going to get the HD's touring shield until the counter guy told me he has never sold one. I picked mine up on sale when it was 20% off.
I bought a detachable windshield on ebay and paid $75. This was after buying a 1/4 shield and having it painted to match my Super Glide Sport. The 1/4 fairing looked rad, but, didn't do much for blocking wind on long rides at highway speeds. I was saving up for the expensive Roadawgz windscreen for the 1/4 fairing when I saw the used detachable on ebay. I had one on a 1200C I owned and liked it so rather than spend $169 to look cool I spent $75 to be comfortable. They both use the same Harley mounts so I can switch between the two depending on where I'm going to ride.
I know, I like my Dyna the way it is, but 2 weeks ago, I had to have surgery on both of my hands, and I have been told I should get a windshield so the wind doesn't push up against my chest and not holding on to the handlebars so tight.
I will have to break down and buy one soon.
I can't ride now anyways. I went to try and pull in the clutch yesterday, I could pull it in, but it was really hard. I still need a few weeks to get my strength in my grip back.
Lots of folks disagree. For instance, I have a GPS and PV that I don't want getting taken out by a rock. I ride to work; it's too hot to wear coveralls, and a windshield keeps the shirt clean. I feel no need to act macho. Also, I've ridden with and without a windshield, and prefer with. I might still ride without a windshield from time to time. My prerogative.
Others have their own prerogatives. Great that you have something that makes you feel good. Why try to dampen other peoples' fun?
I have the older style quick release windshield on my SG. I put it on when I am running the Houston freeways because of all the road debris that gets kicked up and I use it in really cold (well, Houston cold) and or rainy weather...the photo in my sig was taken in Galveston and I ran I-45 south and SH 288 / I 59 north through downtown that day...and it was a little chilly.
