My bike is a '06 Street Bob with 32,000 miles, no engine mods, very recent stator and voltage regulator replacement. Problem is today I started it to ride, let warm up and after a few moments i began to hear noises from engine (sounded like possible starter engage and spinning but not sure) the noise came and gone while the engine was running. Shut off engine, turned off key, waited a moment, turned key back on, now when I turn the off/on switch to run it turns over and starts, rather then using the start switch. What should I be looking at to correct this? Not wanting to run until I know I am not hurting the engine or other parts. I appreciate any thoughts as to ways I can take care of this before taking to a indy repair or dealership, neither would be great if possible.
Since the starter stops when you turn off the run switch or kill switch, we know it is not the solenoid, because if the solenoid stuck, the starter would run until you disconnected the battery (or the cables melt, or battery dies).
It is either the start switch, or the starter relay.
Find the starter relay (the terminal numbers are marked on the relay).
Disconnect the wire from terminal 87.
Disconnect the wire from terminal 86.
Turn the ignition and run switches on.
Check voltage at the wire you disconnected from terminal 86, you should see 12 volts when the start button is pressed, and zero volts when the button is not pressed. If you get these results, the start switch is good (replace the starter relay).
However, if you get constant 12 volts at this wire, even when the start button is not pressed, it means the start switch is bad.
these switches will go bad. I experienced the same problem at the end of a long road trip from Houston to NE Alabama and back. I stopped to fill up in Vidor, Texas and the starter hung when I restarted. Both switches had gone A4TU and the starter was engaging as soon as the ignition switch was turned on. HD replaced both switches and the whole clutch and basket assy under extended warranty. I was in and out of a lot of heavy rain on that trip and I assume that had something to do with it.
