Hey guys, I have an 05 FLHT standard with about 4800 miles on it. Today I decided to go for a short ride, so I backed the bike out of the garage and started it up with no problems. I got about 3 miles from the house and as I was coming to a stop sign, I heard a grinding noise coming from the engine and the radio display went blank. I pulled over to side of road and cut the engine off. When I turned the kill switch back to run, the engine started turning over as if the start button was pushed in. I checked the switches and they seemed to working fine. I got the bike back home and pulled the switch housings apart and checked the wires and switches, but did'nt find anything that looked abnormal. After about 30 minutes everything started working normal. Is there a relay that could have went bad or hung up? Any info would be much appreciated.
New here but I will give you my 2 cents, your bike being a 05 it should be under warrenty. I would take it back to the dealer and have them look at it and see if there is any safety bulletins on this. Sounds like maybe a bad relay or one getting hot.
I just had the same thing happen on a 04 883 sporty. just posted on sporster section. I pulled small relay and it stoped and you can feel it clicking with wire off starter. Just fired it and was letting warm up. Cleaned and sprayed every thing. the switch is a sealed one. will do it just turning switch on some times. any one else?? gar
ok I called hd factory no one has heard about this. but my 04 883 when i went to coffey this am I pulled small relay after it started. came out pluged it in an turned key if fired up lucky it was netural. so ran the test All ok. now it would have to be the wires from the switch getting togather as it takes 12 volts from battry to cut off thn to switch. back to small relay. or the relay its self. So it would have to be in the switch or the relay its small and only 11.00 and every thing else checks ok wires like new no cuts or pinched all connections good.Test light will work with button pushed in spot where relay goes got 12 volts.Cant be starter relay took that wire off and the relay would still click sometimes when key turned on. hope you can find yours. I am replacing my small relay first. but it can be dangerous. I had my fx relay on the motor to stick and bike went into the garage wall An had to cut battry wire to stop it. was a new starter kit. quit and never done it again. cu gar
Hey guys,
Sorry for the delay in posting a follow up, I havent logged in
for a couple weeks. I finally had to take it to the dealership and they replaced
the start switch inside the hand control. I had replaced the
black controls with chrome controls and switch covers. They
said the contacts inside the switch had come loose and were
touching. The switch is a sealed unit, so I don't see how
the switch caps could have done that, but that did fix the
problem. They said that since I changed the controls out myself,
the warranty did not cover it, so it ended up costing me $117 bucks, the switch was
about $45 of that.
Hope this helps

Sounds like just about every HD dealer 'voids' warranties at their own discretion. I've taken my controls off a few times, to tinker around with things and cannot see how you could make a switch go bad in any way.
The more I read here, the more I feel that dealers are not really there to help and don't care about their customers. My first impression, when I was looking at bikes was a negative one. Out of the 5 or so salesman I dealt with, only was was cool enough to answer all of my questions. When investing $19K in a new bike, I expect every question to have an answer with a smile.
