Default Dealership Rant

I recently traded in my 2010 Harley Forty Eight for a 2011 FXDF Fat Bob. My Sportster was TRICKED OUT! I mean all the way from the LED Daymaker headlamp to the VAnce and Hines Staggered Short Shots and dyno tuning. Plus it was in better than perfect condition. Let's just say that I had spend quite a bit on add-ons for it. The Dyna I traded for looked very nice. It had a couple of additions that the previous owner had put on including a set of Rush Slip Ons that greatly improved the sound over the stock mufflers.

I just discovered the "ongoing" problem with the famous shearing muffler bracket bolts. All three were broken. I had no idea this was an issue with the FX line. Apparently everyone else did! I know damn well the salesperson had to be aware this was a problem and that this bike was a victim! Or perhaps I should have done more research? The Dyna had 4 grand showing on the odo, ran beautifully and was super comfortable (ever gone very far on a Forty Eight?) I mean, c'mon. You know they had to know? Well, rather than just 'put a band-aid on" and fix the bolts, I installed the Staggered Short Shots to fix the problem. While I was at it I had the Stage One intake mod done and got a dyno tune. Bike is a monster now!

Guess what? Now I find that there is a problem with the stock tires cupping. Well, I'll be getting new tires in the not too distant future but It doesn't look like I'll be putting the stock meat on again! I guess the previous owner really didn't take as good care of his bikes as I do.

Point I'm trying to make is that it seems that the dealership would be open and honest or at the very least repair any know problem with a used bike. I guess honesty is non existent when it comes to making a buck. Sorry, I'm not buying the "perhaps they didn't know" thing. I thought the trade ins had to be gone over with a fine tooth comb prior to reselling. Guess that was wrong!

Well, I really like the Bike I got. And now that the biggest problem is overcome It'll just get better and better. While I've owned a couple of sportsters, this is the first Dyna I've owned so be gentle with me.....

You inspected the bike prior to purchase right? You test rode it prior to purchase right?

Sounds like you rushed into it and didn't take a very good look at it. I have 8 grand on my stock tires and they're fine, I don't know how yours are cupping at 4k. Anyway hopefully you get all the little kinks out and enjoy the bike, it does look to be in great condition from the pic.

If the sporty you traded was less than perfect and had a few issues would you have told the dealer about them or let them find the issues themselves...The new bike looks great....

yep, who knows, my bike came with a K&N high flow kit and they didn't even clean the filter, I got it home & it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in all 14,000 miles that were on the bike.

Do you think the brake fluid was changed? Really, that's a two year requirement. I remember an old saying, buyer beware, you are buying pre-owned. Some people will take of their machines and some buy on impulse and then lose interest. This wasn't intended to slam the OP but to enlighten him or her.

I don't agree that you should be ranting at the dealer over this. "Gone over with a fine tooth comb", are you kidding? Could they afford to spend the labor to do that and remain in business? Even if they did, I'm not sure they could have anticipated your tires would cup.

When I bought my used Dyna from an independent, I found out on the ride home that the front brake light switch didn't work, which was somewhat dangerous in the heavy traffic. But I didn't even bother returning to ask them to repair it because I knew they wouldn't have the part in stock. I went the next day to the local dealership, bought the manuals and $50 in parts to fix it myself. I worked a fair trade-in so I was and remain satisfied about the transaction. In fact, I'll be returning to that independent to buy my next motorcycle.

Regarding your Sporty, I think we've all been there. Sporty's are the most traded in Harley, if not the most traded in bike from any brand. And accessories are not worth anything in resale. On my last three bikes, the only money I'ver lost while trading was on accessories. Unfortunately, the money most of us spend on Harley accessories is substantial.

Enjoy the new bike, I prefer my current FXDL to the XL1200R I owned a few years ago.

That "fine tooth comb" would $$$ to the price tag. If they sold it as "certified" or some of the BS like that they put on used bikes, then maybe you have a point.

It's a good looking scoot. Fix the few problems and enjoy it.
