not trying to pile on here, but at what point of looking over the bike that you were buying did you not notice broken bolts and cupped tires? i don't think i've ever heard of a single person complaining about a exhaust bracket issue, and you may be the first person i've heard talk about a stock tire cupping issue...at 4,000 miles. futhermore, i'm a pretty honest guy by nature, but i have yet to see or hear of any person go into a dealership with a trade vehicle (bike or car) and start pointing out defects in the vehicle that they are trying to get top dollar out of (especially when people feel their trade is worth millions and complain about how much they are getting for it when the dealer reveals the value). who knows, maybe you are the only person in the world that would devalue their own trade. honestly though, what DID you look at before purchasing this bike? not to mention if it were so easy to miss, why would the dealer have found the issue? maybe they are the victim here as they were duped by the "dishonest" previous owner?

Exhaust bracket mounting bolts, through the trap door, break, or walk out. Just had my 2010 Dyna repaired. I'm told it's not uncommon with baggers, they'd only seen a few Dynas though.

Here are a few to get you started on the exhaust bracket:

And although I didn't say mine were cupping, I said there was a problem. Here are some on the front tire cupping problem:

I think OP is just a little frustrated and disappointed thinking a dealer could be trusted. Truth is honest people are few and far between and OP needs to realize that if he hasn't already by now. When I sell something to someone I point out every flaw I know about so I can sleep at night knowing I was honest and square. I'm smart enough to know it's highly unlikely I will get treated the same in return.

Op fix the things u need and move on. You will really enjoy the bob when you mark this up as a lesson learned and ride on. Nice bike too btw. I tried not to bust your ***** to bad lol. But next time u will know to look it over good yourself

so, a post about a 2002 with rusted components, and the rest are issue with aftermarket exhaust being installed improperly and bolts backing out. do you plan to do any of your maintenance in the future? do you know that you must get a wrench and actually test the tightness of nuts and bolts? so, then you get to the tires and it's guys complaining about uneven wear on 10,000+ miles tires. ok, you got me buddy. i'm glad you have so many useful posts about these subjects....seems you were unbelievably knowledgeable about the issue prior to buying the bike yet you missed it during your own inspection. maybe i'm crazy, but if i know of so many issues like this and i don't inspect that on the bike in question....who's to blame? unless the dealer touts being "certified", then all they are doing is getting a used bike and putting a nice spit shine with a price tag and out on the floor. either way, glad you proved me wrong, enjoy your new bike and all the maintenance that goes with it.

No, I wasn't knowledgable at all regarding the Fat Bob. I found these posts after the fact so I wasn't "unbelievably knowledgable" about it at all.

As for turning wrenches, yeah, I do realize that. I was trained in Crash/Fire vehicle repair and maintenance in the USAF during Vietnam. No stranger to wrenches. I should have looked the bike over and done more research prior to buying. And now I've pretty much fixed what was wrong. I'm happy with the bike, still,it would have been nice to not have had to spend the additional bucks! My loss for not being more skeptical about buying used.

Incidentally, just saw your post regarding the headlight on your Street Bob - damn nice find. Really changed the look of the front!

Exactly right! The bracket problem is now A-OK and I'm very happy with the bike. Looking back, the thing was probably ok when I took delivery and sheared the bolts after I bought it. Anyway, it now fixed and shouldn't ever be a problem again. I'll be inspecting a lot closer in the future as I plan to keep this bike for some time!

The way to buy a bike is to go over it with your own fine toothed comb, point out the faults and ask to have them fixed or offer under the asking price and fix them yourself.

Most car, truck or bike dealers chuck their trade-ins out on the forecourt with no inspection so it really is "buyer beware" H-D is no better or worse than anybody else.

In NZ they have to have warrant of fitness that is less than 30 days old if sold by a dealer so then you have some come-back on faults that are warrant issues...other than that, take your time and drive a hard bargain....same with private sales too.

That's a good plug for your state. I think I will stay here with the mostly honest people.

First I've heard of it. Which bolts are they?
