Default Battery questions

I just spent 150 on another new battery.
First one lasted 5 years ....my present battery just freaked me out yesterday when I hit the start switch my Dakota volt meter went down to 7-8 amps and the bike wouldn't turn over. I tried again and she did turn over. Barely.

The bike was on a trickle and the green light was showing charged.
When it fired up my volt gauge went to 13.8 volts so I know I'm charging.

My buddy said " you could have a bad plate in the battery" so being I'm goin to Tennessee soon I bought another new battery today. Just in case so I don't get stuck on the road.

Question
Shouldn't there be some kind of rubber pad on the battery tray so the new battery don't take all the vibrations all the time? Or just drop it in.
I forget if I ever had a pad in there and I'm wondering if I did and I pulled it out did I cause this battery to fail early because it's always getting rattled?

New batteries should to be fully charged before first use to get the best life out of them. If you are really using a trickle charger then I would highly recommend getting a battery tender instead. Trickle chargers can damage a battery if left on too long.

You could always bring the battery to an auto parts store and have them run some tests.

The other thing I would do is check your battery cables. Clean the connectors with sandpaper or a scouring pad. You should do this on the starter end as well as the battery end. Also make sure your connections are snug but not overtightened. I know someone who stripped the bolt that goes into the battery terminal and his bike had the same symptoms.

Good Luck!
