On a rubber-mount Sportster, move the negative cable to the lug on the back of the primary ... That way, you can firmly tighten the negative terminal on the battery before sliding the battery into the tray ... then connect the pos terminal. I'm convinced that it was supposed to be this way ... I can't for the life of me figure out why it isn't from the MoCo. I've made this change to dozens of RM sportster with, including my wife's ...
Harley starters draw ****-tons of current ... Loose terminals will absolutely cook right off of the battery (as you now know) if they're not tight.
