Default battery smoke

I tried to start my 11 Fatbob after the long winter( had the battery in the basement fully charged) and the positve on the battery started to smoke, actually melted, before this it turned over a couple times but very slow, any ideas. I ordered a new battery but alittle skidish whether I should try it

Are you sure that it was the battery that was smoking and not one of the cables?

A loose cable connection will cause an arc, and create lots of heat.

The battery was strong enough to make smoke,it's fine. Remove the cable, clean the end of the cable and the battery post, and put the cable back on.[and tighten the connections]
Check your oil, check your tire pressure, and go for a ride.

Have you replaced any fuses with one that's rated higher than what's called for?

Are you sure you made the right connections and didn't get them backwards?
