Default Stator?

Hello,

Looking for a little help. Yesterday while riding my wife wore her new Harley heated liner. Well when she put it on high a few minutes later my battery and check engine light would come on. My 2012 streetglidw also has a 1000 watt amp and my GPS was on. If we shut off her liner and radio eventually the battery and check engine light would go back off. This could be repeated all day long. Only difference was by end of ride it began happening with liner on medium also. I checked my battery today and it's at 12.6 volts shut off and when running it drops to 12.1 instead of increasing. I tried to check A.C. at voltage regulator but I could not remove the connector. Anyway is there enough info here to assume my charging system is starting to fail? Or am I checking it wrong or even just possibly over tasking the system with amp and liner? Idk any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bryan

Your regulator or stator is gone. Running at 2000 rpm test rpm, it should be around 14.8 or so. Since you have 12.1 , and the only real check for the regulator is 2000 RPM DC check without fancy stuff, you need to check the three lines out of the stator at their connection to the regulator. Take them off. Three checks for two test. make sure none go to ground with OHM meter. Other check (be careful..AC is dangerous) is running, three checks to wires with meter set to AC. At 2000 RPM, should be around 32-46 volts AC (approximately 16-23 per 1000 RPM AC)

If you say it's bad I'm just bringing to my mechanic tomorrow. Let him take it from there. Thank you so much!

One last thing, at minimum, make sure your battery terminals are tight. I would think they are since from what you are saying, it's still starting. Sure your meter is correct? Most checks like this should be with a volt/ohm meter.

If it's not charging, it will soon not start. Charge it good before riding and don't go far. It will cut off once voltage gets too low.

Why couldn't you unplug stator???

Is it possibe you just have to much stuff plugged in? At end of day would it run with heated liner off and big amp off?

The stater is rated in amps, you may be overloading it.Like Zerk said, turn some **** off and see what happens.

Just curious who put a 1000 watt amp on a bike with a 50 amp stator?

That's true Rip, I just hope he didn't pay someone to do it. If he did it himself maybe this will help.

P=IE

Watts are a measure of electrical power. The formula above is Power, aka Watts = I, (current in amps) times E which is Voltage.

We know your amp is rated at 1000 Watts so if you divide it by the bikes Voltage you can calculate the number of amps you need to run it all out. 1000 / 12 = 83 amps.
When you replace the Stator or Regulator or both also remove the Amplifier.

Another quick stator check is to remove the Derby cover on the Primary and see if the oil smells like a burnt circuit board.

Good luck

When battery light would come on I would shut off radio and liner and after a few minutes the light would go back off. It never hesitated to start the entire day.
