Default Speedometer not working

I have a 2008 nightster, and When I turn the ignition switch on, my speedometer will light up and show everything but when I actually start the bike it completely shuts off no speed reading no miles and no back light. I’ve checked the fuse and it’s not blown. I was able to shut the bike off and start it back up and get the gauge to work now I can’t even do that. I was thinking it was the harness but it looks fine.

You think it might help someone diagnose if they knew what you were working on?

Sounds like a loose ground, not sure where the sporty dash gets it's ground from.

Also, check to see what your battery is charging at - if they overcharge, speedos tend to shut down.

Clean the sensor on top of tranny. Been known to be an issue.

What is it with people and grounds? It takes to two wires. Plus it takes a sensor. But people just throw out grounds for everything.

Speed sensor won't turn off the backlight and gauge as described by the OP.

If you can't find anything at all, try wiggling the key a little while it's running and see if the gauge comes back in.

You are right it would not kill the odometer. I would expect needle to fall or act funny, never seen it.
