Default Need a source for color coded wire.

Hello all!

I'm rebuilding my first bike, a 00' fxdwg. I want to build a new wire harness as the original is 20 years old and I don't want to have to deal with a short when I'm done with the rebuild. I couldn't find a resource for a new harness already built and I'm having difficulty finding color coded wire. I'm hoping over if you have a resource for me to check out?

Brian

Is there a reason you think the harness will give you trouble, has it been cut into, butchered etc?

If the harness is in good condition, you might just consider cleaning all the terminals in the connectors, or even just replacing corroded terminals.

These two companies are good outfits to deal with, fast shipping:

Wirebarn has excellent wire, but you won`t find all the colors you need.

Namz has the colors, but in 100 foot rolls...

Probably a dumb question but, have you checked with HD parts? It would seem harness replacement could be acquired in sections. I’ve done this with car restorations. Not so sure with HD.

Good luck.

I have cut into the harness, just the hand control portions when I installed ape hangers. I thought small gauged wire had a tendency to get brittle over time leading to shorts. Shorts can be a bitch to identify and correct. So, I thought I'd build a new harness since I have everything removed for new powder coating. Think I'm over doing it?

I'll check with Harley on a new harness. Not sure why I didn't. Guess because nothing came up on internet search when I tried.

Thanks!

You can get extended premade wiring harnesses for handle bar swaps cheap, way simpler & cheaper than building from scratch if you don't have the stuff already.

So, Harley no longer makes the harness, which is as I expected.

Wite kits for handlebar swaps only give you extensions for the wire traveling through the handlebar and to the hand controls. I'm wanting to replace the entire harness from headlamp to taillight.

I can get enough color coded wire to make a new harness, but just not in the same color combos used by Harley. Guess I'll just have to make my own harness and annotate the changes in the color codes in my shop manual.

There's a number of aftermarket places selling complete wiring harnesses, PM johnjzjz and ask where he gets his, you can find him the shovelhead section if you can't PM yet

Yup, age does matter when searching items for restoration. Wonder if possibly a later model bike might fit. Sounds like your customized effort will be the best way.

I have found shorts in handlebars most often to be with connections and not so much the wire failure. Just a thought.

That will turn the bike into an electrical nightmare, we see posts all the time on the forum about hacked up electrical systems done by the previous owner (it`s always the previous owner, not the current owner).

I think it is a bad idea, and a lot of expense and unnecessary work, but it`s your bike.

I don`t know where you get the idea that the wiring is going to become brittle, the bike is only 20 years old, not 60.

The 31 year old wiring on my `89 Softail is still fine.

To do it right, Namz sells all the colors you need, but you will have to spend some money.

Good luck

Unless you are very experienced, a 20 year old harness will be more reliable than a homemade one.
