Default Ground issue

Hello, I was installing a new taillight on my 04 Softail. 3 wires, ground(black), running(red) and brake light(blue). I connected them to the bike’s harness and it doesn’t work. When I bench tested the light it works fine.

now...did another test and connected my wires and isolated the ground wire. Touched a metal part of the frame and boom...lights worked!

so clearly my ground in my bikes wire harness is faulty.

my question is, can I run a separate wire from the ground post near the battery to the back of my bike and connect it directly to the taillight?

is there any issues doing this?

thanks!!!

Sounds like you've solved your own problem.

So I am guessing wiring a separate ground isn’t going to cause any further issues, correct?

A separate ground wire won`t hurt a thing.

Excellent. Never hurts to be safe before proceeding. Appreciate the feedback.
