I have 2011 Sportster 1200. While riding, my bike shut down, but then started on its own again before I even had a chance to pull off to the side of the road. Kept doing this. Somtimes fuel pump runs somtimes doesn't. I changed the fuel pump, rode for 8 to 10 hours then it started acting the same. I tested the charging system and everything looks fine on that end. Has anyone ever had this issue. Thoughts?
Check for DTCs, diagnostic trouble codes. YouTube has videos to show you how, search for checking dtcs on a sportster.
Checked the codes P0261( front injector open/low)
P0263(Rear Injector open/low), P1002 (system relay coil high/shorted), and P1003 (System Relay contacts open). I cleared them went for a drive just to make sure they weren't old codes, and same codes came up. Gonna try replacing relays see what that does.
Are lights turning off, all electrical cutting out?
nope Lights stay on speedometer display stays on. Engine light comes on bike shuts down, then the bike will automatically start to accelerate again engine light goes out, then bike will shut down again down the road. Whatever it is shuts my fuel pump down as well.
also just replaced battery with a new one.
Cutting in and out make me think coil. My coil was dying, but since bike was going 55 it would fire back up. But not sure what to makes of fuel pump turn off. Could look at what is on various relays. Look what relay the fuel pump is off, might also have something for ignition.
I think the clue is, lights stay, but other electrical stuff turns off.
Is there anything that would tell the fuel pump to cut out, if there is no spark, so you don't load up on fuel?
