starter drag

1984 Super Glide 1340 Evo 1340cc--Rebuilt starter and new starter solenoid--the starter drags so much; it doesn't roll over. The problem is the stater gear is binding on the clutch gear. The bearing in the primary cover is good and lubricated. The two alignment dowels are both there and in good condition. If the cover is forced upwards, it cranks over as it should. How can I remedy this problem? thanks, gregjo1948

Maybe put washers on the bolts to line up right ie: shim it..

replaced the bendix also????
which starter, back when there was prestolite and delco and they do not interchange parts.

There are no bolts to shim that would do anything.

The bendix works as it should. The problem is the gear that the bendix operates, is running too close to the clutch gear, making it bind and crank over too hard.
