Default 1995 dyna lighting issues

Hello!
I picked up a 95 dyna wide glide for a project and i need a bit of help on the taillights.
I think this is an aftrmarket tail light assembly and the brake lights are not illuminating. It has 2 wires leading to it and I noticed under the fender there is a 3rd wire not connected to anything. Is this normal?

The tail light/brake light assembly uses 3 wires.

Blue is running light.

Red/Yellow is brake light.

Black is ground.

Thank you. So, this light only has 2 wires avaliable at the socket. Is there a way to wire it with 3? Or do I need a new tailight?

Which wire was not connected?

It is designed for the body of the tail light to ground to the fender instead of using a wire that runs to the frame, this is the method that was used on the older bikes (like my `89 Softail).

You could add a wire to the body of the tail light which could be connected to the ground wire that runs underneath the fender, but if the brake light and tail light work ok as currently set up, you should be fine.

The black and blue wires go to the tailight and the red and yellow wire is not connected to anything

A picture of the aftermarket light socket would help greatly so we know what you're dealing with.
I believe Harley used the "frame for ground" system until 98.
On my 94 Softail, the side lights were turn only (1 wire),
taillight was tail/brake only (2 wires).
All self-grounding.
If your taillight doesn't have a third wire, it's the wrong taillight or the wire's been torn out. Likely looking at the rub mark on the crimp connector.

The wires you must have are the Red/Yellow (Brake) and the Blue (running light).

The black wire is ground, you can run the black wire and fasten it to a ground location on the tail light, or hope the tail light assembly grounds by contacting the fender (or get a 3 wire tail light).

If someone did not connect the Red/Yellow wire, they didn`t think a brake light was important.

Got it. Didn't need the ground from the bike harness. The light must be grounded off the housing. It was wired wrong. Thanks for the help!

BTW, loose the crimp connectors.
Under the fender is the worse place they can be used.
