electric gremlins
2012 RK. Been having this issue on and off for a while. Started with engine light coming on. Occasionally bat light as well, Bike goes on tender, generally if bike is parked for a period, if i remember!
Today both lights came on bike ran ok, gave her a blast, lights went out.
Yesterday ran V meter read about12.8. after trickle charge went of a ride meter still registering high 12V.
Months ago i tried dealer, **** on a bull, problem still there.
Ideas? can you get affordable scan tools or is this an oxymoron if you mention harley.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
2. Take a reading of your battery voltage while at idle and see what it is.
3. Then take a reading of your battery voltage while the RPM is 2,500 - 3,000 and see what that reading is, should be 14 or so VDC.
4. You could do a full diagnostic of your stator & voltage regulator as spelled out here:

NOTE:
The above information, while credible, is worth what you paid for it and should not be considered gospel.
Do due diligence, research and have a H-D Field Service Manual before working on your bike.
You will probably have many opinions and suggestions presented; make sure you research the person providing the helpful information as there are some who provide good information that is useful and some who speak out of other orifices with gibberish. You will figure out this quickly.

A battery should be around 12.7, when off the charger for awhile. But I have had plenty batteries start bikes 12.3, listen to how it sounds.
Rev the bike up, it should go to 14.4 volts dc at the battery, if not next step is volt reg and stator.
Myself I would charge it over night, and then take off tender for a few days, see if starts.
Harley I believe says it should be on a tender when not riding for 5 days. I go lots longer than that. But I suppose it is not a bad guide line for some. ride the bike and quit using the tender, during riding season.
That 12.8 may have not really been an accurate reading.
Be sure your connections on battery cables are clean and tight.
With meter on cables, cranking voltage should not drop below 9.7 on a stock Harley.
