Charging???

I have a '68 XLCH that has been converted to a 12 volt ignition. My fully charged brand new battery went dead after a few rides. I recharged the battery and chacked the voltage. I started the bike and checked the voltage at the generator, then at the voltage regulator (right before and right after the regulator), then at the battery. The only possible problem that I found was at idle the generator would sometimes drop to 7 volts. I had the generator tested last year, the shop replaced the field coils and said everything else checked out. Am I missing something or is this common? Should I put the battey tender on it more frequently? I should mention that the bike had spent more time idling because I jut rebuilt the top end and had to run it through a few heating/cooling cycles to seat the rings.

Ya, those oldies dont put out much at idle. It shouldnt drop much below 12 @ idle and put out 13.5+ above 1500 rpm. Maybe short rides and lots of idle time pulled it down.
