Default charging issue

well put a new generator and cyclke electric endcap regulator on a month ago, and las tweek i had a battery explode on me, replaced it and tested the output voltage, couldnt get an accurate reading cause the numbers where bouncing all over the place but it was bouncing between 14.5 to 17 volts at the battery fro mthe regulator it was reading 13.3 to 17 volts and this is at idle, gonna see if i can get a better multimeter and an extra set of hands to see about getting a more solid reading but these numbers seem way to high what do you guys think?

There's the reason the one battery exploded...

When things start "exploding" its prolly time to take it to a reputable mechanic imo.

Yes, 17 volts is way to high, shouldn't have more than 13.2 - 13-5, your regulator is putting out to much. Have that checked out. Ride safe.

With the motor at a FAST idle (1500-2000 rpm) the voltage spec. across the battery is 13.5-14.8 VDC. Sounds like you have a bad regulator.

What should the voltage be coming off of the regulator wire? I just installed a new regulator and if I just test the one wire I get like 8 volts. Also, should the bike run if I disconnect the battery?

I should also note that I checked the stator and at 3,000 RPM or so I'm getting over 70 volts.

Thanks.

That's not how you test the regulator. Connect the regulator and test across the battery at a fast idle as stated above. The regulator needs a load on it's output.

Thank you cHarley. I've done quite a bit of research and I don't think it's the regulator that's bad. I'm pretty sure it's stator. Like I said the regulator is new and with everything installed and the bike not running I'm getting 12.5 volts at the battery and when I start the bike the voltage is the same. It doesn't increase at all when I rev up the engine either.

I'm just confused that the stator is pushing out the voltage as it should, but I read that they can do this and still be bad. One test was to check continuity between the two pins on the stator and the ground. I did this and I'm getting full continuity. I'm no expert on electrics, but my multi-meter has a setting that will buzz if it can complete a circuit. When I place one meter probe on the stator pin and the other on the ground I get a buzz and the numbers jump around on the screen then go back to 0.

Anyway, I'd be curious to learn what I'm actually testing above on the stator and why it's bad.

Thanks.

That's definitely a short to ground.
