Hello, I have a 1992 Ultra Classic. First noticed Upper right tail light goes off when brakes applied. ( Person behind me noticed). Then driving home from Houston last night with dim and highway lights on and running steady speed of 75 mph the lights went dim to bright about 5 times. This happened 4 times on 180 mile trip home. Where to start looking?
i think you have 2 seperate issues here.
1. brake light - this is a dual filament bulb so more than likely it's simply a bulb that needs to be replaced.
2. dim to bright - do you notice anything else going dim to bright? do you notice voltage fluctuation on the volt meter when this happens?
To start looking,
1.) check that you battery is good, the cables are tight on both ends of both cables, make sure both ends of both cables are clean and free from corrosion and oxidation.
2.) Then if the above doesn't work, I would head towards the connector from the voltage regulator to the stator. Pull that connection apart, check for what might be wires arcing (burnt looking metal prongs), clean it out, put a dab of dielectric grease in it and snap it back together.
"UltraNutZ" is on the right track as far as the tail light is concerned ... We ran into this a couple of times on the baggers. Check and replace the tail/brake light ( you might as well replace both sides while you're in there ) and see if that helps with the "bright to dim" situation ... You might be getting a "backfeed" ... it sure is worth a try! Good Luck Brother.
$5 says your regulator is going, going, gone . My 95 EG did the same thing. Watch the volt gauge. Its gonna go from battery voltage to pegged every few minutes of riding.
