Default 05 Dyna Marker Lights On When Ignition Off

Hi everyone,

I have a 2005 Dyna Lowrider that I bought used almost 2 years ago, and about 2 weeks ago started installing ape hangers with new risers, and relocating the front turn signals. I've been working a few hours a night on this, and am about 80% complete. I have the new bars and risers installed, wiring extension done, controls installed, and throttle cables setup. I still need to install the new brake line, clutch cable and lever, bleed the brakes, and put back the air cleaner housing and battery box housing.

Last night I thought I'd connect the battery and check that the front turn signals didn't get mixed up, and I noticed a number of electrical problems. First, as soon as the battery is connected and with the ignition off and key out, all the marker lights come on. As I insert the key and switch the ignition to ACC, the tail light comes on and the markers remain on. When I switch the ignition to ON, the headlamp also comes on and the marker lights stay on. During this process the kill switch is switched off. If I switch the kill switch to RUN, the electric fuel pump does not whine as it normally does, but the neutral and oil lights illuminate. Also, the turn signals do not blink during any ignition state (OFF, ACC, ON). The only control that appears to work outside of start which I haven't tried, is the horn.

Additionally, the instrument cluster is "dead" in all ignition positions. The gauge lights don't illuminate, the mileage doesn't show, and the security alarm key doesn't illuminate or blink. I did have the instrument cluster off as I had to reposition the tank to cut the clips holding the throttle cables to the frame. I reconnected everything as it was when I bolted down the cluster to the tank.

I haven't yet had time to check any fuses, but will tonight.

It's also worthwhile noting that the bike hasn't been started yet this season, and has had the battery out for about 12 days. This is the first modification on this bike. I installed Burly bars and the Burly extension kit, complete with heat shrink to protect the new connections. I could have pinched or scraped a connection in the harness as I pulled the service loop back, but the extensions were each insulated (shrink tube) and the extension bundles were also wrapped. I was thinking it could be the alarm in storage mode, but with no key blinking, that doesn't quite fit either. Could it be a switch / sensor not closed from a part I haven't yet installed?

I've searched the service manual and these forums extensively and can't seem to come across anything that quite fits this situation. If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or advice I'd sure appreciate hearing it. I'm prepared to undo the wiring extensions if those smarter than me here suggest it, but I think if that were the problem, I'd see more working electrical than I am now.

Again, many thanks for any suggestions. If I've left anything out here, please let me know and I'll provide.

IMO you messed up the wiring.

Check out the wiring diagrams for the '05 Dyna Models over here:
