ignition problums

ignition problums
i have a 1986 xl sportster. I turned the key to start, the starter clicked once
and the bike went dead. no power at the breakers, coil, dash lights. when I turn the key OFF I then have power at the ignition red wire and to the breakers and the red ignition wire but not with the key on.
now I do not even get any power or starter click, jut dead all over ?
Can anyone help ?
is it only the ignition switch of someplace else ?
