Default Near catastrophe

I’ve had adjustable Screamin Eagle pushrods on by bagger for several years and have installed/adjusted several times with no issues (cams, tension shoes, lifter replacement, etc). Several days ago I had to remove/install and thought no big deal. Well, I went out for a ride and all of a sudden heard a bunch of noise. Limped back home on one cylinder (fortunately I was close to home).

Lifted the push rod cover tube and the bottom part of the pushrod was gone. I thought WTF and looked closer. The locking nut had come completely off and the bottom of the pushrod had screwed itself into the upper part of the pushrod. No locking nut to be found. I had a real sick feeling in my stomach because I knew the lock nuts were tightened when I reinstalled.

Anyway, took the cam cover off and there it was in the bottom of the cam chest. I looked at everything expecting to see shards of metal all over the place, but found nothing. I reinstalled the pushrod this time using Permatex Red thread locker. Motor runs fine like nothing happened.

I'm glad I don't have adjustables. I've seen too many threads like this one.

I had an adjustable loosen up after being in a couple of thousand miles. I put blue locktite on them and haven't had any trouble in 5 years.

They make a thin green loktite that can be put on after youre done adjusting and tightening, it seeps into the threads. More convenient.

My Smith Bros EZ pushrods came with a tube of red. I used red on top and bottom locknuts.... then changed lifters.. What a PIA!!!

So, now I use red on the bottom locknut and simply tighten the top, just like the SEs before. Works good enough for me.

we use adjustable tappets.ran adjustable p/rods in most our gas bikes(biggest 167" with a .990 lift cam, still never had one come loose)the only way i would ever run solid p/rods in a performance motor,is to get a set of adjustables, put them in,adjust them, take them out(marking each position)and get some smith bro`s blanks and make them to the exact measurment of each p/rod.
