Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
So the other day, me and my bud were hitting an on-ramp and he decides he wants to play. So I hammer down through second gear into third, get up to 5000 rpm and as I go to shift into 4th...there was nothing. The engine just shut down between shifts. I clutch it, evaluate what is going on, put the kill switch to stop then back to run, hit the starter and she fired right back up while I was still rolling with the clutch in. Is there a chance I asked a little too much from my cams and floated a valve causing the shutdown? I still had electrical power and stereo still playing but engine was shut down. I've been riding since then and she's runnig like a champ, but I haven't hammered on her like I did at that time What say you gurus?

You can't over rev a HD unless someone set the limiter to something above 6500.. You are able to take the throttle and hold it wide open and not hurt the motor, providing you don't do it for too long.. Maybe a couple minutes.. I've taken an 02 RKC and wound it to 4500, WOT and pulled the clutch in on a dare.. Motor just bounces of the limiter.. My bet is that somehow the bank angle sensor got bumped and the TSSM thought the bike was tipped.. Requires an ignition / kill switch cycle to reset.. A tell tail symptom is the starter button won't work either until you cycle the kill switch or main ignition.
Add.. Another issue is that if you like to putt and don't get on it, you might have knocked some carbon loose and fouled the plugs temporarily.. I would expect that it would be hard to do with these new ignitions but I've seen it happen to old Leadwings..
