Wonder if your starter solenoid got stuck. Jackshaft not disengaging.
This would cause your battery cables to smoke- been there.
If cables, and battery are good, starter is the next piece of the puzzle.
You have to get to the bottom of this to be able to go anywhere with confidence, knowing your bike will fire anytime.
This issue is not going away unless you find the problem and fix it.

I broke down and bought a new starter (arrives today). I'll take the old one apart and look at things. I had to do it this way as my bike is the only transporatation I own and being without it even a couple days can really cause problems. It sucks I have to do it this way, but hell, it's life in the woods, heh. Atleast, if I find the problem with the old starter I'll have a spare. I'll keep this thread updated on anything I find, so it can be a help to others who might find themselves in the same or similar circumstance.

Good plan. Be sure to get the old starter back in tip top shape right away or you will procrastinate like me and find yourself in a bind when it counts.
I still worry that you need to find the source of the problem. There is a short somewhere...
Put the new starter in, and on first try starting up the bike, it fired in almost less than a second. The starter barely seemed to turn and the bike fired right up. Waited a few hours and tried it again and same thing, one second of the starter turning and the bike fired right up.
I'm betting that some internals of the old starter are just worn or real dirty. The old starter itself was cruddy on the outside but all the connections to it were clean so I know it was getting good signals, so I'll try to take it apart as per what the service manual says and see what happens.
