Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I had the dealer install VH PD header pipes, Hi-Output mufflers, torquester cams and a dyno. I installed the VH duke air filter before I took it in. The bike runs great but has some funny behavior:
1. Often but not consistently, the air filter sounds like someone is tapping the metal part with a screw driver in step with the engine firing. It wasn't making this sound before I took it in. I took off the cover and it still makes the noise. I took off the air filter and made sure everything was tightened down and the noise is still there.
2. At consistent speed (not when accelerating or decal) it seems to miss fire. I cruise at around 3000 rpms, so it's very very brief, but I can hear it over the hum of the motor.
3. It seems like it's idling low and when idling, it sometimes sounds like it's going to quit, but it goes right back. Maybe the misfire is happening?
I took it to the dealer and the sales guy says that's normal. The service guy wasn't around. They test ride the bikes and are usually very good, so I assume everything is ok. I'm going to take it up there again. It did a 200 mile run just fine minus the above, but no breakdowns or anything weird.
Do cams just make funny noise, or is my tune off? This is a 13 FLHRC.
Also, I had this exact same setup minus the cams on a 12 ultra it they don't do this.
Post the sheet including the afr graph if possible. Did they do an actual dyno tune or a dealer download. I would assume with the tqsters it would have to be a full tune. As far as the ac noise its probably normal as some cams and an open ac have a tendency to produce the noise you are experiencing. That should be a nice running combo. I had an indy do the tune on mine.
Only limited knowledge here too, but looks normal to me. Maybe someone that knows tuning a little better can help. Numbers are respectable but the tq hits later than i would expect. Idk , at least have your tech check it out i guess.
Clubber, you have to remember that what you see on that dyno sheet is WOT; it doesn't tell you anything about what is happening at partial throttle. The noise you hear is not unusual; many cams with more overlap than stock will exhibit that noise and with an open air filter housing, easier to hear that noise.
I would find a different tuner; not saying your dealer tune is not good but dealers do not have a good track record for producing optimum motor tunes. Just like a medical ailment, better to get a second opinion.
I took it to the dealer and they said the sound is normal. Because I have an open air filter and a new cam, it's more pronounced. Now I gotta figure out the missfire part. Thanks for the input.
Alot of times when you upgrade cams with longer duration you will hear more intake noise because of the extended overlap. Not uncommon.
This is true. It is more of a cluck than a tap and from what I understand it is an echo off of the throttle body butterfly due to the cam overlap. Wrap a towel around your air breather for a couple of seconds and I bet it disappears. Nothing to worry about.
Yup. thats what 36* overlap doe, and your dyno sheet looks real good for bolt on if you look closely you'll see that it's correction factor is .97 so actual numbers will be higher and without any head work i would not worry about anything and just ride. It's all good.....
You still don't know what the motor is doing at partial throttle. WOT looks good, too good IMHO; don't often see a perfectly flat AFR line like that.
Get it back on a dyno and see if you can replicate the idle and partial throttle problems you think you are experiencing. A proper tune should have that motor running smooth at all rpm ranges.
