I picked up an 01 dyna wide glide with 19k miles and am looking at replacing the cam chain tensioners in the near future. With that, I thought it would be good to throw a set of cams in there too while it's opened up. I'm on a tight blue collar budget and was curious what would be a good cam choice for a stock 88 with stage 1 already done? I have the high flow air cleaner and vance and hines shorts, would like to eventually get some big shots though. Any help is appreciated and a guess on price would help out.
The early valve springs will not accommodate cams with lift greater than .510". The S&S 509 would be a good bolt in for your application.
You did not mention if the bike is carbed or EFI. Carbed will require rejetting and EFI will require a fuel management system and a tune.
Check into the CYCO tensioners in lieu of another set of OEM tensioners and upgrade the inner cam bearings while you are in the cam chest. Get the service manual for your bike and read through the appropriate sections several times before starting.
You will need to go up on the main and probably shim the needle up about .050". A programmable ignition would be a nice upgrade but the OEM ignition curve will probably be fine for a cam only upgrade.
