Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Installed a set of mildly worked 06 heads, billet camplate (already had Feuling pump) and Andrews TW54 cams this spring. I've been chasing a knock for a couple weeks (only rode about 4 miles total) sounded like a rod knock, couldnt tell if it was coming from the engine or not. Everything was relativlely quite unitl it warmed up (don't know why now). Re-adjusted pushrods, no change; checked compensator bolt and primary parts, all good. Finally took the cam cover off today to investigate and this is what I found:
In case you cant tell my rear tensioner exploded, ****ed up the chain which was eating into my pump housing. No damage to the cams or camplate. I tore the pump apart and found no internal damage, also flushed out the camplate. Oil in the cam chest had silver flakes, no chunks.
I don't understand how or what exactly happened, but glad I didn't ride anymore that what I did.
Bummer. So sorry, my Bassani Pro Street Brother! From the third & fourth pics, looks like your rear timing chain is indeed toast. Where is the link spindle that is missing from the chain? Better find it!
The damage to the outside of the oil pump is cosmetic. I know that you said that you checked the pump, so I assume that you checked for damage and gearotor tooth-to-tooth clearances greater than .004" (HD max spec for acceptable wear). You already confirmed that the inner pump is not damaged, but replace the pump if the inner pump housing's surface is scored badly where it mounts to the camplate at the crank pinion shaft and/or if the flat outer surfaces of the gearotors are scored, and/or if the gearotors' tooth-to-tooth clearances are close to .004" or greater.
I had a Feuling HP+ oil pump and the gearotor tooth-to-tooth clearances measured .006" (way over spec) after 20k miles. Called Feuling and they offered me a replacement pump for something like $175. Good to know if it turns out you need one.
I disassembled the pump and the lifters, I didn't see any damage..no scoring or gouging. I thought I was going to have to replace the pump at least...The damage to the pump housing doesn't concern me, lots of material left. The missing chain link and pin were in the drain pan I used to catch the oil from the cam chest. I have a spare chain, just have to get a new rear shoe assembly
