Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I am having a couple issues that I am hoping someone could give me some insight:
I just bought a used 2001 FLHTCUI about a month ago. It had a Supertrapp 2 into 1 exhaust and a Arlen Ness air filter already installed. I cleaned the air filter and replaced the spark plugs. I couldn't find any fuel management add on's anywhere.
When you first start it, it will stall out unless you rev it up for a sec. Once its been running a few minutes, its fine. I can drive it back and forth to work with no issues, until you get on the throttle. If you are accelerate quickly above 3500, the engine with just bog out and you will get an engine light flicker on and off. I really don't know how else to explain it. It seems like fuel is shut off for a second, engine light flashes, and as soon as you let off the throttle and it runs and drives fine again.
I would start with a FS manual and fuel pressure testing and go from there. Even the factory map should suffice and not bog at 3500 rpm. Might be a little lean but not that bad. I would check the Ignition/tuner/fuel section for similar threads. Also if the engine light is coming on it might be setting a code. FSM will help there too.
Hi GJB, GRB here, fellow Supertrapp owner! A great choice of system, which gives excellent performance and torque. It's quite likely a PO has installed the system and filter without making proper adjustments. Unfortunately there is a lot of ignorance/innocence out there when changing such things.
The quickest way to solve this IMHO, and probably transform your bike, is to find a local indy/tuning shop and visit/talk to them. I suspect they will recommend an add-on tuner, which with a decent tune by them won't be cheap, all in, but should get the best out of your bike.
