Default Oil dripping from air filter!?

During recent long trip I started having oil drip from my air cleaner. Situation:
  1. Oil level is good -- not overfilled. Checked both hot and cold.
  2. Only seems to occur at sustained higher RPMs 2600-3000 (hi-way or mountainous areas with lower gears required to climb hills/mountains)
  3. Total amount of oil is probably 10-15 drops after an 8 hour ride.
  4. Most noticed after stopped running for the day or at a long lunch.
  5. Over winter changed cams to Woods 222/high flow air cleaner kit/fuel-moto quick change push rods/screaming eagle tappets (lifters).
  6. Oil pressure is good -- running is 45 psi. (has always been higher than before the cam/tappet change -- prior to cam change running was 30 psi)
  7. Oil and filter have been changed since the cam work.
  8. Rode about 1500 miles including expressway running prior to this long trip with no issues.
  9. Had 30K maintenance done at HD dealer just before going on this long trip.
Appreciate any advice/ideas on how to diagnose problem!

Thanks, Todd

From what I hear, this is common with operating at highway speeds with a free flowing air filter. Where are the head breather holes vented to ? Back into the carb ? down to a canister or filter ?

You most likely need to take out some of the oil that's in the motor. Not a lot but somewhere around 6-8 ounces.

Start here.
Check and clean or replace the "PCV valve" .
Simple and inexpensive.
Adhere to the "KISS rule".

I asked my dealer the same thing and they told me to drain 1/2 qt out. I now run the bike 1/2 qt low and no problems.

Yep, this! No drips since I started running 1/2 quart low.

Thanks for the help everyone. I need to change the oil now anyway so I will add a bit less... Which makes me a bit nervous So to get this right, when you say you run half a quart low, do you mean that you only put 3 quarts in instead of 3.5?
Also talked to Jamie at fuelmoto today and he said to fill so that oil is at the lower third point on the full hash mark section of the dip sick with the engine hot. Sound like what works for you?

Jamie is correct. You don't need to fill up to the "full" mark. Just make sure it's above the "add" mark.

ok, I know this may sound stupid but are you sure it's engine oil and not the oil used when the AC was cleaned and oiled?

I only ask because this happened to me and as I started to trouble shoot I realized the oil was red. I popped off the filter and realized I had probably over oiled it after cleaning and a fair bit was in between the back plate and filter gasket so at high cruising speeds the wind would push a few drops out.

Just a thought.
