Hey all, got a noise that has me stressing.....
Stock engine '09 Softail Deluxe with Stage I and running Rinehart Crossbacks.
Just a shade over 40,000 miles (64,000 km's).
Got home from our Sturgis trip two weeks ago and now I'm hearing a noise that seems to be in the area of the rocker boxes.
It's a whirrrrring type noise, kind of like the drone from a v-8 gear drive type set up.
It changes with engine speed. It's not a tick or a knock, more of a whir.
I noticed it while riding but it makes the noise sitting parked and running.
Is this the type of noise a worn timing chain tension shoe gives?
Any other ideas?
I changed the oil before we left for Sturgis and faithfully run Amsoil 20W50 V-Twin oils.
I do all my own work but am stressing on this one.
I do still have warranty but I'm almost scared to ride it the hour+ to the dealer.
Thanks in advance

Sounds like cam chains. Pull the cam cover and take a look. Don't be afraid to ride to the dealer; it's under warranty. Have them take a look in the cam chest. If it grenades on the way, better yet; no argument from the dealer about warranty repair.
Thanks djl
This bike has never been in the shop other than MY shop for routine services and tires so fingers crossed they'll look after me.
I'd be ok paying extra and have them do the inner bearings and drop in 255 cams, SE tappets, and adjustable pushrods while they're in there if they're going to warranty the main issue.
Thanks djl

Just say NO to the SE tappets; too many better options.
Just got the call from my local dealer......they are covering the repairs.
They want $1700+ to do cams, lifters, pushrods. I think I'll just hold off for now, Sturgis kicked the hell outta my wallet. Lol

What are the repairs? If the repair is replacing tensioners/chains, all you should have to pay for is parts; most of the labor should be covered under warranty.
Cam tensioners are shot "I" think. Warranty covers that part.
To do cams and all I was quoted 4hrs labour. Total bill to do the add-ons while they're there is $1706.54 after tax
4hrs @ $120/hr
Cams $431.02
Pushrods $241.82
Tappets $326.75
The rest is gaskets, O-rings, etc + freight
Glad your main issue is being covered under warranty but it seems strange that they want to charge you four hours to change the cams, pushrods, etc. All those components are removed to replace the cam chain tensioners.
Sounds like it should be ~$800 for the parts, tops.
