Ok I removed the spark plugs and one has a chip on it. I pushed the bike back wards in gear it did go back a foot or so then stopped pushed forward a again moved forward then stopped. Tried to use the starter it engaged once then click.
A friend of mine that is a mechanic thinks it dropped a valve. He recommends taking the head off and see what the damage is. Any opinions if this is the right next step? Thanks

The gear on the crank that drives the cams may have sheared the key and slipped causing the cams to go out of phase, which would have likely bent some valves. I would do a leak down test to see if you are loosing air past the valves. Look in the spark plug hole with a scope see it there is damage visible. I had this happen to a customer of mine, it broke the intake valve off in the front head and imbedded it into the piston.
