First poke a hole in the bottom of the filter on the outside edge and let it drain into a container. Now it won't be as messy. Then get a long Phillips screwdriver and a hammer and knock it through both sides of the filter and give it a turn. The Philips screwdriver will easily penetrate the filter without having to mess up a good screwdriver.
Absolutely, this works too... I have an old junk screwdriver that I basically turned into an awl years ago just for this very purpose. The point (see what I did there ) is to reduce the amount of blunt force trauma to the filter mounting. Had the flange break once on a piece of farm equipment doing this...
Here's the best tool I've found, easy to use, great in tight spots on any size filter, works every time and no mess from stabbing holes in the filter!! I use an extension on a ratchet..
That K&P your running comes with an end cap filter wrench made exactly for that K&P. I have the chrome brother filter.
Did they send you that socket and strap thing that you have?

If its not a K&N filter with the nut on the end. The strap wrench never fails me. I have the Harley one with the cut out for the sensor, it will slip if the filter was put on by King Kong. It seems a lot of them lately were. (Working on friends bikes)
So this morning I bought a cheap oil filter wrench (fram cup type) at wally world, took it home and with a cutoff wheel took a section off to clear the sensor up front. What a POS !!! didn't even think about working. All it did was slip. So what's the best one out there that actually works?
If you want to get the job done with what you have at the moment.
Make a small hole at bottom of filter with a punch in order to drain filter of oil.
Drill a hole on the face of cup you modified at the 9 oclock and 3 oclock position.
Place cup on filter and punch a hole at those positions, into the filter.
Place a screw through cup and into filter at each hole.
The screws will hold cup and filter together and prevent slip.
Retry.

I have the K&P wrench that comes with the filter, just won't use it. Got the strap wrench from JP Cycles, a while back, for a filter I couldn't get off my Rocker C, but I'll use it on the K&P if needed, when I take it off to clean it, so I don't scratch it. Works well in tight spots on my cars and ATV also.
This is the one I/we use at the shop and at home. It is made by Evolution Industries and works the best for this type of wrench, fits tight and does not slip...
