Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I have an 89" EVO with an older S&S 502 cam, and I don't like it. It's too big, takes too long to come on. The motor is built on S&S cases (not that it really matters) HD jugs, Ross 9.8:1 pistons, factory heads w/83cc chambers and an S&S G. I have a track on an E right now, but I don't like the cam. I have been looking around a bit and the Andrews 27 looks ok, but I dunno. The motor is in a rigid frame chop, and might weigh 450lbs at most. Suggestions?

EV27 is a great cam for EVO's. I've used a number of them in the past with good results. Lots of torque down low and big mid range, where you're looking for improvement. EV3 is also good, but comes on a bit later and runs out further...probably not what you're looking for.
If spring room, a Wood 6H.
BTW, what is the gearing of this machine?(which could be the root issue)
Some "expert" builders like to put some looooooooooooooooong-legged gearing on a bike like that.
Steals it's ability for it to accelerate correctly.

Didn't think about the gearing. It's a 48 in the back, and I'm pretty sure it's a 23 in the front. Hard to see behind the bearing support. I need to mark a tooth and roll it around and count them. Now that you mention it, this thing has way too much top end for a light little rigid. It'd be an easy change, specially since the chain is a little sloppy and would need a new one sometime in the near future.
Just looked at the 6h cam. WOW that is a tall cam! .631" lift? Can that be used with springs only, or is there some clearance work needed in the rocker box along with piston to valve?
