Default 82 shovel cam

what would be a good all around cam for a stock for now 80" shovel motor, and is the Andrews A grind a hydraulic cam, or for solids.

Hi Mav: My 81 Shovel, which is a .030 over,80 cubic inchhas the Andrews No.1. This is a low comprssion equal to the 'A' cam. So, for a 7:5 to1 compression it is a good street cam. Idle is not affected, and no head work needed, so I will say that the 'A' cam is the same. It has a little more duration and liftthan stock.

It is best to give andrews a call, and tell them what you plan in your build, how you plan to use it, and they will help make a good decision. You do not want to get a cam then find out the pistons, springs, heads, etc., will not work for what you want.

Good luck

I don't think it matters whether you use solids or hydraulic. I run the Andrews A grind in my old shovel with solids. Runs very nicely, not a race bike but she will keep up with an Evo easily.

Like HogBack said though you would be well advised to give Andrews a call. I'm sure their tech guys can answer any questions you have.

Just get a "B" grind, ohsoooo much better than the "A" and if you want to run hyd. lifters they make a "B" for that too. I have used the "A" grind with hyd. lifter with no problem, but trust me, just get the B

I agree with Cramp. I am running the BH(hyd. Andrews B). Still has a sweet raspy idle and I guess a little more power!!

I had an Andrews AB in mine and changed to a Crane 300H fireball and it really came alive. To me, Crane is the way to go.

I had a B grind in my first shovel. It had an S&S super B carb and some other work I am unaware of.IT had a dead spot with that bow leg maker carb, but flew like a rocket ship when you twisted the wick. I have a 84 inch S&S hot set upstroker motor now,its ok,but not like that old one

The A grind is a hydraulic lifter-friendly cam. I have on in my 81, which has been rebuilt and balanced with wiseco 9:1s (could be 9.5:1, it's been a while) and an S+S Super E. I tried a B grind (and solid lifters) but it lacked bottom and mid-range. When it came on it was great, but the power just came on too late. Bet it would be great in a 93". The A worked better for my current build.

IIRC, Andrews recommends high clearance valve collars for some years of shovels - mine was one of them.
