Default Throttle by wire problems

I have a friend with an 09 FLH called me tonight having some problems. Last year he was having some issues with the bike running erratically, so he changed out the throttle grip sensor and hasn't had a problem since. Took the bike out for the first time this year, 4 miles down the road and it kicked down to idle and nothing..... I have never messed with the TBW system. What is going on? Is it some type of limp mode?

If bike only idles and the sensor can be rotated it sounds to me like some type of "limp mode" I would start by checking to see if the throttle sensor harness has come unplugged. Not sure how to verify if the throttle sensor is being seen by the ECM.

Right hand grip is not slipping off is it, doesn't the inside of the grip need to engage the end of the sensor?

Try looking at the wiring harness on the back side of the throttle body. There was a service bulletin that spoke to fretting corrosion on the pins to the connector. I had a similar problem and found the bottom wire (black with white stripe) was broken internally. An environmental splice to join the broken wire and problem has not returned.

A friends RG did the same thing a couple months ago at first start up. Cycled the key off and back on issue gone(no codes either). A couple weeks later he left his house headed to mine, 6 miles away. Made it within 2 blocks and did it again(no codes), costed into my driveway.

I remembered the bulletin and pulled his plug off, did not look real bad but could have just been getting started to corroded. Cleaned the contacts with a "Q-tip" and alcohol, then added dielectric grease. So far, a month later no problems but it is still early.

I will check the wires next chance I get to make sure there is not a problem.
